With the majority of British people agreeing that accepting refugees from countries such as Syria and Libya would be a sign of ‘Britain at its best’, a BBC poll released today clearly highlights the continued public support for a compassionate response to the refugee crisis.
At Refugee Action, we see the reality of this on the front line every day and since the crisis unfolded last summer, support for our work and the refugees and asylum seekers we support and campaign for, has doubled. We must be invigorated by these results and continue our efforts to work with the British public in fighting for the rights and wellbeing of some of the world’s most vulnerable people.
Stephen Hale, Chief Executive at Refugee Action says:
“Does Britain care? Yes! Millions of people want the government to do more. There is no public mandate and no excuse for slamming the door shut to people fleeing war and persecution. But government policy can and must also address the concerns of those who take a different view.”
